"I wish to thank Thistle DKI and the group of contractors used to dry and restore our home. You stepped into a very diffucult situation and turned it around such that our involvement with the insurance company and adjuster was minimum. You not only restored our home, but made it better. Being properly prepared for any emergency is vital for all families. Previously we’ve talked about having an evacuation plan and how to extinguish a fire correctly. Today we’re going to address fire extinguisher inspection and maintenance. Being ready for an emergency is the first step in minimizing your risks as well as preventing costly fire damage restoration.

Let’s go over some of the basic rules when it comes to fire extinguishers.
  • When stored, the extinguisher needs to have an unblocked path and should be easy to grab in the case of an emergency.
  • Keep in mind the size/weight of the extinguishers and the smallest member of the family. Many big extinguishers are heavy and hard to handle. Get the correct size for the space and your family.
  • Be sure your extinguishers have the correct pressurization. If they don’t have a pressure gauge on them, it’s worth the money to buy a new one. The needle should be in the “green” section; not too high, but not too low.
  • The nozzle, hose, handle, etc. are not hindered in any way. Check for dents, rust, chemical deposits, and other damage closely. If you find any damage, buy a new one!
  • Finally, ensure that the pull-pin and safety seal are still intact. Even if you haven’t used it, replace extinguishers with broken seals.
  • Better safe than sorry!! Never assume that a fire extinguisher is good because it hasn’t been used yet!

Many manufacturers and experts recommend shaking dry-chemical extinguishers once a month to prevent the extinguishing powder from settling at the bottom. If you follow this recommendation, do a full check of your extinguishers while shaking them. It’s relatively fast and could save you down the road.
